Providing special needs and inclusive education for children with single and multiple disabilities is our prime intent. Our education and support teams are trained to handle all forms of disabilities among children that have limited capacities to acquire and retain knowledge, skills and attitudes. We focus on providing three categories of intelligence: Cognitive, emotional, and social intelligence. We blend the normal curriculum with special skills education that assists children to adapt or manipulate the environment they are staying in.
This program focuses on the provision of healthcare needs and safety for children. The growth and development limitations among children expose their bodies to extreme vulnerability and low immunity to easily acquire viral, and bacterial infections, and other ailments. Pre-assessment reports indicate that over 80% of the children have underlying medical conditions. Medical and treatment bills form the highest cost for the centre over the last five years. The provision of healthcare shall eliminate loss of children on medical grounds despite associated costs. The centre does not have standby medical providers, insurance or financing, and the provision of medical services remains a substantial challenge. Nurture Africa has supported DCU to provide medical services on a case-by-case basis.
This program area focuses on immediate provision of nutritious food items to children supported at the centre and caretaker homes that are in emergency need. We focus on nutritious food that is vital for growth and development of the body and cognitive capacity of the children. We train community and caretaker homes on nutrition and feeding practices for infants, children, pregnant and lactating mothers. We support micro, back yard, wall and vertical gardening, livestock rearing in limited spaces for optimal yields. We support improving value chains and market access to grow income and create wealth to sustain provision of basic needs of disabled children. DCU uses her demonstration garden to mentor and coach other targeted beneficiaries.
The program area seeks to demystify the misconceptions, attitudes and negative norms associated with disabled and special needs children. It is aimed at creating social acceptance and inclusion of special needs children in society and programming to improve living conditions, observance of rights and elimination of all forms of abuse. It is common belief and practice that these children are not accepted and are seldom seen as "sign of bad omen" or a curse in families. The heaviest burden to disabled and special needs children is misinformation. DCU projects to use multimedia platforms to reach out to targeted communities to communicate, educate and inform on inclusion and rights of children with special needs.
